Living the lifecycle of the sunflower
From Seed to Sunflower: Discovering the Full Lifecycle of a Sunflower 🌻
There is something truly magical about watching a tiny seed transform into a towering sunflower. At Jane’s House Montessori, our children have enjoyed a wonderful hands on journey of discovery as they explored the full lifecycle of the sunflower, from planting a single seed to harvesting the sunflower head and carefully extracting the seeds themselves.
Planting the Seeds
Our journey began in our preschool, where the children learnt how to carefully plant seeds into the soil. This simple activity offered so many opportunities for learning and wonder. The children experienced first-hand the importance of caring for living things, learning that plants need soil, water, sunlight and time to grow. Then during our regular visits to the allotment, they were able to watch our sunflowers grow. Rather than simply learning about the lifecycle of a plant from a book, the children were able to experience it for themselves.
Watching Nature Unfold
Each visit to the allotment brought something new to notice. The children observed the changing height of the plants, the developing leaves and, eventually, the flowers opening towards the sun.
This experience beautifully reflects the Montessori approach to learning: giving children the time, freedom and opportunity to observe, investigate and discover the world around them.
Harvesting the Sunflowers
When the sunflowers had completed their growing cycle, it was time to harvest them. Our children were delighted to see that the journey didn't end when the flower bloomed and another stage of discovery was about to begin.
They carefully collected the sunflower heads and brought them into our Practical Life area, where our children could explore what was hidden inside.
Developing Concentration and Fine Motor Skills
Using tweezers, our children are now taking turns to carefully extract the individual sunflower seeds from the dried flower heads.
This seemingly simple task provided a wonderful Practical Life experience. Our children work slowly and purposefully, developing hand-eye coordination, concentration, fine motor control and perseverance as they pick out the tiny seeds one by one.
There is a real sense of satisfaction as the container gradually fills with seeds—and a lovely realisation that these are the very same seeds that had begun our journey months earlier.
Completing the Cycle
Perhaps the most special part of this experience was helping the children recognise that the sunflower's lifecycle is a continuous cycle.
A seed was planted.
🌱 It grew into a seedling.
🌻 The seedling developed into a sunflower.
☀️ The flower matured and produced new seeds.
🌻 Those seeds can now begin the cycle again.
Through this experience, the children have not only learned about the lifecycle of a plant—they have lived it.
From the allotment to our Practical Life shelves, the children have experienced the joy of nurturing something, patiently watching it grow, harvesting the result and discovering what comes next. It is this kind of purposeful, hands-on learning that makes Montessori education so meaningful: children are active participants in their learning, discovering the world through their own hands, senses and experiences.
And, of course, there is always a little extra joy when learning provides us with a handful of sunflower seeds to plant again next year! 🌻
